It's pouring, and Grantaire is laughing as he makes a poor attempt to shelter Edgar and himself both with his jacket: it's not large enough to do the job adequately nor does he have quite the height advantage he needs, so they're both damp but he's warm with it.

Taking the steps two at a time, he feels a pang of guilt as he smells what must be ordered-in food wafting down the corridor. Gavroche probably does not long for the trappings of a proper family, but he still feels like a poor caregiver.

(He also feels a pang of hunger. It's been a long night at Tintern.)
